                                                 IKAT FABRIC

Fabrics have played a vital role in the evolution of human beings and the industrial revolution has been a base for their rise and rich varied business in this sector. When we are dealing with fabrics, it takes our mind to style and fashion but many aspects are needed to be considered like their build-up quality and the way they appear when someone wears them. One of the important fabrics that enhances our outfits is Ikat.

In India Ikat fabric of Patan, Gujarat and Odhisa are very famous. The history of Ikat dates back to the 6th century and the pattern has never been seen back since then. With the increase in the number of industries, this fabric gained more popularity. This fabric is easier to make with industrial machines. Ikat dye method contributes almost one-third of the total dying fabrics, this indicates the kind of popularity the production method has gained.

In Ikat fabric, an amalgamation of yarns, with the desired wrapping given to make a particular pattern. The different color patterns can be obtained by this kind of production. Due to the complex weaving process, a gorgeous pattern is created and the blurry appearance makes it just upright.

History-

Fabrics were naturally drawn and made and there was no lacking in the creativity of the people back in the time. Different countries of the world had different creations and thus even before centuries, people were very much fond of fabrics. 

Ikat is a well-known fabric that got highlighted in Asian regions then it got famous in Europe and hold its position still for decades. Its production started in the early 20th century when the study was ongoingly related to rich textile traditions. The Indian Subcontinent, Central Asia and Southeast Asia are the regions that have incorporated this fabric up to a great level. Its pattern has been written in the name of history, as it got famous in the European culture in a very short period. India was one of the major countries to have implemented this pattern and design, as it was very much appreciated by the people.

Importance of Ikat fabric in fashion designing industry-
                                     

Many designers and high street brands, replicate the look of Ikat. But the real Ikat is recognized by looking up close or just simply turning the fabric over and scrutinizing it. Ikat is one of those fabrics, that is always in the designer’s mind. The shirts made from Ikat, are well known in foreign countries. The richness of this fabric has not been hidden and even at an international level, it has been at one of the tops. 

Types-


Varieties in fabrics are very common. The same kind of fabric can be made and drawn to perform a specific task. This has led to many developments and strategic changes in the Ikat fabric.

1.Single Ikat- Single Ikat is the simpler one. And is mainly of two types. The first one being the warp Ikat and the second one is Weft Ikat.

There is only one warp yarn that is dyed by the technique itself, ikat. This is for warp Ikat. Initially, this method was used a lot, and hence, it was among the most adopted Ikat type. This fabric has a noticeable pattern, which enhances its surface. Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Sumatra are the regions where it is produced. And for the Weft Ikat, As the weaving progresses, you see this pattern on the weft. Weft Ikat is just another masterpiece built by skilled artisans and to attract customers. It is slower to produce weft Ikat due to the time needed to stitch patterns after they are passed through the shuttle.

2.Double Ikat- Embroidery using the Double Ikat technique involves resist-dyeing the warp as well as the weft before weaving. Enhancing the pattern and an effort that is worth a while can be seen in Double Ikat. The process to create this fabric is highly complex and time-consuming, which makes it very expensive. Patan is one of the world's most famous cities for Double Ikat fabrics.

Production- 

Production of Ikat is a well-known process that is compiled of several procedures. The way it is produced has its versatility. Not everyone is blessed with the talent of producing this kind of fabric, hence special care should be taken while making this fabric. The harder

There are several steps to make the Ikat fabric as follows-

Step 1- Bundle- Fabric yarn is bundled into thick ropes dyed into a particular pattern.

Step 2- After that process, the tying is laid off and the fabric is up for weaving.

Step 3- After the fabric is woven, the original pattern becomes visible giving the fabric its unique look.

Step 4- It might be processed again, dyed again and other processes are lined up to draw it into the final product. 

Step 5 - The fabric is cut as per requirement and sewen.

The production of Ikat is a process that needs skills and both machines and man-work are contributed equally in making the final product.

Price range:

The price range of Ikat starts from 280 Rs./meter to 580 Rs./meter. Price variations are due to the several types of Ikat there are in the market. 

Uses:

The fabric can be used in creating any trendy home furnishings and apparel like dresses, Jackets, Skirts, Jumpsuits, Kurtis, Shirts, etc. The dresses made from this fabric is very famous and has a unique complexion, especially in the woman of India.

The good thing about Ikat Fabric is its durability and the blurriness that creates an unmatchable impact. People have cherished this fabric and will continue to do so. In terms of market demand, there has always been a rise in demand for Ikat fabric. Overall it has created a class apart position for itself.
